Acne Treatment

Acne is on of the most common skin conditions in the world. Acne treatments vary according to the severity of the breakout. With your doctor’s help, you can come up with an acne treatment program that best suits your needs.

Acne is divided in to three categories-mild, moderate, and severe. Mild acne can usually be treated at home with over-the-counter medication. You can gently cleanse your face daily using a high-quality soap or cleanser, such as Dove or Neutrogena. You may also want to try products that include benzoyl peroxide, such as Benzac or Clearasil. Salicylic acid has also proven effective for treating mild form of acne. Some products that have this ingredient are Clearasil and Stri-Dex. If using these products seems to have little effect on your acne, you may want to see your doctor so that he can give you prescription creams and lotions to help clear your pores.

If you are suffering from moderate to severe acne, you need to see your doctor to treat your condition. As these deeper pimples and blemishes can leave permanent scarring, you should start a treatment program as soon as possible. You may need to apply prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide to your skin as well as antibiotic creams and gels. You may also need to use prescription retinoid and azelaic acid. The doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics to fight any bacterial infection that may develop as a result of your acne. You may also have to visit the doctor’s office to have any large cysts drained professionally to eliminate the chance of getting an infection.

There are also various treatments available for scarring caused by the severe form of acne. Dermabrasion is one treatment option available to aid in removing scars. This procedure involves the doctor using a wire brush that is whirling at high speeds to buff your skin and remove the scar tissue. Collagen injections are also available to plump the skin that is underneath the scarred area. Laser surgery can be effective in burning the damaged tissue off, while chemabrasion involves the use of specific chemicals to remove the scar. You can consult your physician to decide which of these procedures would benefit you the most.

Acne can be a serious and traumatic condition, but by working closely with your doctor, you should be able to find an effective treatment that is right for you.
