Acne is a common skin condition that afflicts approximately eighty-five percent of all teenagers. While most of these individuals grow out of it by the time they reach their late twenties, others have it for their entire lives. By understanding acne and its causes, you can better develop a treatment program that is right for you. Acne is defined as a common inflammatory disease of the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands that are located in the skin. These glands produce sebum, an oily substance that is a combination of fat and dead fat-producing cells. This substance is important as it prevents the drying of membranes as well as protecting the hair and skin. This sebum is usually deposed of by moving up and out along the hair follicles. In hairless areas of the body, the sebum moves along the skin ducts. Acne occurs when the excessive amounts of this sebum collects, causing lesions to form. There are several types of acne. Tropical acne occurs as the result of light-skinned people being exposed to heat and humidity that they are not used to. Chloracne results from the person being exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbons (for example, chlorinated swimming pools). While these forms of acne can be traumatic, the most common form of acne and the one that most people suffer from is acne vulgaris. There have been many factors that have been attributed to the cause of this form of the condition. Genetics seem to play a role in the appearance of acne. Members of specific families seem to develop acne more frequently than members of other families do. Hormonal changes can also cause a breakout of acne which explains the fact that teenagers and premenstrual women suffer from it more often that other individuals. Pregnant women may also have problems from this condition, especially in the first half of their pregnancy. Menopausal women have also complained of developing acne in their forties and fifties. Stress is another leading cause of acne due to the adrenalin gland increasing its production. Again, this could explain the fact that the main groups that are affected by this condition are teenagers who are dealing with puberty and females that are dealing with menstrual, reproductive, and menopausal changes. External elements can also lead to a breakout of acne. Bacteria in the pores of the skin can cause the condition as well as taking certain medication such as steroids. The accumulation of dead skin cells due to a lack of good hygiene can also lead to its development. If you are suffering from acne, you should determine the factors
that may be the cause for your condition. While over-the-counter
creams and medication are available, your condition may require a
prescription. You can discuss your acne with your doctor or
dermatologist to choose a treatment program that is best for you. |
