Understanding Plastic Surgery

Many people consider plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery to be the same thing. In reality, cosmetic surgery is a type of plastic surgery but is not the only kind. By understanding exactly what plastic surgery is, you can better comprehend the importance that it has in many people’s lives.

Plastic surgery is the surgical procedure that a person undergoes to repair congenital or acquired abnormalities as well as to restore the contour of certain areas of the body to improve the appearance and function of tissue defects. In other words, plastic surgery repairs and rebuilds areas of the body that either have been malformed since birth or has been injured due to trauma or the natural aging process. The need for this type of surgical procedure became apparent during World War I, when doctors were struggling to repair gross deformities as the result of the modern battlefield.

Due to recent advances in the field of medicine such as skin grafting and the invention of such materials as silicone, doctors today have a much better chance of totally repairing body areas on patients that have suffered from severe burns and scars left from the removal of certain cancers. This is a godsend for women who have mastectomies. Surgeons are now able to totally rebuild the removed breast which can ease the emotional trauma that is experienced by these women.

Plastic surgery that is performed for purely cosmetic reasons is called cosmetic surgery. This type of surgery is voluntary and used for a variety of reasons. Many people have cosmetic surgery on their noses to repair the shape of it or to minimize the size. Face lifts are done to lift the skin and remove wrinkles that are associated with the aging process. Cosmetic breast surgery has also become popular recent years, involving either enlarging or minimizing the size and shape of a woman’s breasts.

Referring to this type of plastic surgery as cosmetic surgery has led to many people not realizing that these procedures are surgical, with all the same risks involved that accompany any other surgery. Unfortunately, there are also some plastic surgeons who do not fully explain these risks to their patients.

If you are considering having cosmetic surgery, you need to be aware of the risks as well as the benefits. A few brave women who have had horrible surgical results have come forward to make people aware that the damage from these voluntary procedures may not be worth the cost. It is a decision that should not be made lightly.
